Although hardware and software factors play a critical role in Internet Security, many security threats can be avoided by simply adopting good Internet usage and Web Banking habits. Here are a few rules of thumbs to follow that will help ensure that your computer is not compromised by viruses or hackers:

  1. Never open email attachments from people or organizations you don't know.
  2. Don't assume that an email with a familiar "from" address is actually from that person.  The "from" address can easily be faked.
  3. Don't install pirated or illegal software on your computer as it could contain viruses.
  4. Make sure that your virus scanner is updated every day or two with the signatures of the most recently identified viruses.
  5. Make sure that your operating system, web browser, firewall and virus scanning software are up-to-date.
  6. When visiting Web Banking sites, make sure that the URL (web address) is a legitimate address.
  7. Use an established and reputable Web Bank that is financially stable and registered in a jurisdiction with strong banking legislation.
